Let me share some views on this new born baby in the internet space - Google Chrome. It came to me as a surprise when I first heard the news of launching a new web browser. I wonder why would someone do it when everyone's happy with what they are using currently. Rather, I would have been delighted if Google would have launched this product a few years ago.
Well, here are some of my observations and opinions about Chrome..
1) Google is probably the most popular brand in the internet space and one of the many reasons it has been successful in being so is because of its quality of innovation.
In my opinion, Chrome brings no innovation, in fact, the idea of running a new instance for every tab/window was not at all required. Firefox does it smartly by saving sessions of every tab/window to recover during crashes.
2) Besides these, I managed to figure out a few glitches which probably even you would have encountered.
v Facebook, as of now (Sept 06, 2008 - 03:15 IST) cannot be used on Chrome, one of the reason probably being, most of its applications don't work on the new browser.
v Simple web forms such as the ones mentioned below don't work properly with Chrome:
Ø Check this link to the Airtel website . Ideally, the select box should show up all the options of available circles which Chrome fails to fetch.
Ø Actions like logging out of simple web applications like JBuzz itself gives you Chrome Error 320.
v Chrome, I feel, has been the most resource intensive web browser I have ever seen. Although it has managed to fasten the browsing speed, it eats up huge resources of your machine. A netizer like me can afford to surf at 5% lower speed but not at the cost of the my lappy's performance.
3) The browser market is saturated all over and it is a huge huge challenge to grab a share of this market.
Marketing web browser is a very difficult task and the Mozillas would know this very well. The only way browser marketing has worked is bundling it with the Operating System, as in IE inWindows, Firefox in Linux, Safari in Mac.
So the only reason I see Google launching its free web browser is its long term goal of introducing a Google Operating System.
Clearly, every new application has glitches and it improves only out of time and use. I hope Google manages to get rid of them and make this browser richer and we as a community help it grow further to make the future of internet brighter.
